Tuloasa Baptisms in Medan

“All praise and thanks to God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has worked with us in making known His gospel to the family of Faigizaro Lase and his wife, Merina Lafau, to the point that they both gave themselves to the Lord in baptism which I performed last Saturday (Aug 22) evening in the river Sunggal in Medan being witnessed by several church members. We pray for this family that they will always be faithful.” Tuloasa Laiya, Medan.

Celebrating Independence Day Indonesia Style

Daniel writes, "Our Independence Day is Aug 17th. Most of the villages, led by neighborhood political leaders celebrate it by having games for all ages, eating chips made of flour, having a tug-of-war contest, climbing an oiled Areca Nut tree, sack races, races carrying marbles on spoons, etc. But in my neighborhood we celebrated by collecting money from each neighbor and then having a meal together. We had prayers according to each religion represented, and Muslems were reminded of the coming of Ramadan and their duty to fast."

Indonesia declared its independence in 1945 at the close of WWII. So this was their 64th celebration. Sukarno, the father of the country, was president until the late 1960s and stayed in power by balancing the military against the communist party. In 1965 there was an attempted coup which the communists lost. Five years later General Suharto was elected president and continued as president unil the late 1990s. Since then the presidency has changed several times in peaceful elections. Bambang is president today and was just reelected to a second term in office.

Thick Islam and Deep Islam

I mentioned in a former post the growing lack of tolerance taking place in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, over the past few years and the increasing tendency of the women to wear the Jilbab or Muslim head dress and other clothing together with the shift away from Western dress styles. That was just my observation but the link accompanying this article confirms it. If you care to read more about it click on the following link:

Daniel's Report - Baptism Today In Jakarta

I went to the ruko (shop/house) at 8 am this morning preparing the plastic pool with my wife, Martha and Indah. It takes around 30 minutes pumping air into the plastic pool and then needs another hour to pump the water into the pool. The man came at 9 AM and we waited until 10 AM for the baptism. We sang two songs and I taught for awhile about how to be saved and the part baptism plays in this process, then I baptized him. He brought cakes and drinks for us. Rider and Abdi both came to encourage him. He is one of my Bible students, came to us through the radio program, studied English/Bible for a while with Marty Johnson, attended our WBS/WEI seminars, has been attending our worship services for several months now, is 73 years old, was a Muslim until 1987 when he began to believe in Jesus and was divorced by his wife because of his new faith. Yesterday, while we studied the Bible together, he asked when he could be baptized. I told him he could be baptized immediately but he said he hadn’t brought any clothes to change into. So we made arrangements to baptize him this morning. Praise God…!

News from Dennis Cady

We opened the children's home with 16 children. We now have 17. We have room for one more girl but have not found a good fit yet. The multipurpose building at the children's home is about 80% complete and will be done before the end of the month. The village preachers will work together to hold a twelve day seminar for about 20 church leaders from 20 congregations in Gunung Sitoli September 15-28. I will be going to Nias September 7 - 29. Two elders from Pasir Panjang are coming to look over the work for 4-5 days. Colin has had a book on "The New Testament Church" translated from Indonesian to Nias and it is presently being printed in Medan. We will be able to take several hundred copies with us when we go through in September.
