Indonesia was once a Buddhist empire with wide influence in Southeast Asia. The Borobudur temple demonstrates Indonesian power and dominance back in the 8th century; but, eventually as the population converted to Islam the temple left unattended was covered up with volcanic ash and jungle growth until it was almost forgotten. In the 1800's first the British, then the Dutch and later the Indonesian government cleared away the debris and encroaching jungle growth and restored this monumental mountain of carved stone. It is today a major tourist attraction and a true marvel.
I have my own photos of this monument taken back in 1971 but they are all on 35 mm slides which I cannot easily reproduce here so I hope you will want to click the link above and look over the article with accompanying photos of this very interesting place located in central Java.
